We Are Beta Chapter, Wisconsin
Beta Chapter members have a rich history of supporting women educators in our city. Women educators gathered together to support each other as far back as 1933 when seven local women started meeting. On Saturday, May 7, 1938 a group of sixteen women officially became members of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society Beta Chapter, the second such group to form and affiliate with Delta Kappa Gamma in Wisconsin. The Alpha Chapter (Madison) was the first chapter in Wisconsin. One of its members, Mary D. Bradford, who was Superintendent of Schools in Kenosha (1878 to 1894, and, again, from 1910 to 1921), was instrumental in the process of affiliation and election of officers in Kenosha.
The new officers were installed during a ceremony at the Kenosha Youth Foundation:
President Miss Edna Bufton, 1937-39 Biennium
First Vice-President Miss Winford Farley
Second Vice-President Miss Edna Hood
Recording Secretary Miss Hattie Meyer
Corresponding Secretary Miss Cora Frantz
Treasurer Miss Charlotte Herring
Parliamentarian Miss Ruth Bahlert
The other founding members included:
Mrs. Mary D. Bradford Miss Jane Vernon
Mrs. Harriet McKenzie Miss Margaret Telfar
Miss Edna Cameron Miss Sigma Corneliuson
Miss Marie Keating Miss Mary Louise Williams
The original by-laws determined that meetings would be held in September, November, February, and May. The original yearly dues were $4.00.
The Beta Chapter membership grew to as many as 85 and has included such respected local educators as Bernadette Tacki, Eunice Boyer, and Florence Trainer.
